This design is inspired by the Irish proverb: “Fásann níos mó i ngarraí, ná a chuirteár ann”
(More grows in the garden than is sown there)
This saying can be interpreted both literally and symbolically, reminding us that we cannot always control everything in life or in nature.
Each tree is unique, and so are the ecosystems they help to create. Throughout history, trees have provided food, shelter, medicine, and practical tools. Because of their essential role in life, they have long been associated with spiritual meaning and magical properties.
In Celtic mythology, sacred trees known as bile (pronounced “bih-leh”) were seen as gateways to the Otherworld, similar to Yggdrasil in Norse mythology. Our ancestors deeply respected both the physical and spiritual importance of trees.
The Ogham alphabet reflects this connection, with many letters named after trees. Ancient Brehon Laws included protections for trees, and manuscripts refer to five sacred trees: Eó Mugna, Bile Tortan, Eó Ruis, Craeb Daithí, and Craeb Uisnig. In Irish mythology, the Salmon of Knowledge gained wisdom by eating hazelnuts from the Nine Hazel Trees of Wisdom growing beside the Well of Segais.
