Description of Mireog

“Smugairle Róin” is the Irish word for jellyfish, literally translating as “seal spittle” — a fascinating example of Irish language imagery and humour.

In this design, the word Smugairle (thick spittle) and Rón (seal) combine to form a unique Irish interpretation of the jellyfish.

Ireland is home to several native jellyfish species, including the Lion’s Mane, Barrel, Blue, Common (Moon), and Compass jellyfish. In recent years, sightings have increased along the Irish coastline, alongside occasional appearances of the Portuguese Man-of-War, known for its powerful and potentially dangerous sting.

This design celebrates Irish language, coastal wildlife, and the rich natural heritage of Ireland’s marine ecosystem.
